Notes
This show contains the finest Visions of Johanna I know of both performance-wise and sonically. (The version from this show is on Phil's Philzone CD).

Although 1995 was a bad year (no matter what someone says -- you don't have the right to call other reviewers trolls and tell them to fuck off), there were a few really solid shows, and this is one. The best of the four I caught in 1995. It's a pretty blase first set song selection, but they jam for a long time on Ramble on Rose, and Vince is on fire during Promised Land, carrying the song. The second set catches fire right from the start with Vince shining on his vocal and keyboard on It's All Too Much, played only a few times. Jerry and Vince playing dual leads, with Jerry on MIDI trombone, is something you need to hear. This leads into a long, bouncy, fun Aiko with more MIDI action. Playin>Uncle Johns is really Playin>Space>Uncle Johns, as after several minutes of normal Playin' jamming, the guys dissolve into a section that is in no key or every key at once, and just refuse to resolve it. They're clearly having fun doing it, and it's a trip to listen to. This eventually settles into the key of G, from which Jerry starts up Uncle Johns, and a fine version it is, again with Vince picking up a lot of the solo action while Jerry plays in support.
A pretty typical Drums>Space follows, until Bob starts that nasty, down-and-dirty vamp that was one of the memorable moments of this show. It led into The Last Time, not one of my favorites, and then Bob Dylan's Visions of Johanna. Again, not what I wanted to hear, but since then, I've come to appreciate the poignancy of this performance and the poetry of the lyrics. Not much to talk about with the rest of the show, although Rain was nice to hear.
